Rules of Differentiation: The Constant Multiple Rule

Erin Horst

Now that we have explored derivatives, we can now progress to the rules of differentiation. These rules are simply formulas that instruct the learner how to compute derivatives depending on the given function.

Another simple rule of differentiation is the constant multiple rule, which states

This rule simple states that the derivative of a constant times a function, is just the constant times the derivative. Consider the following functions as illustrations.

The following graph illustrates the function y=5x and its derivative y'=5.

The following graph illustrates the function y=(1/2)x and its derivative y'=(1/2).
