Name: ______________________       Date: ________

For problems 1 and 2, plot the points, graph the line that contains these two points, and find the slope of the line.  Use the graph paper provided for your answers.

1-    (2,6); (5, 3)

2-    (3, 7); (1, 10)

3-    Determine if the following ordered pairs are solutions for the equation of 5x + 2y=1.

a.    (1,-2)

b.    (2,3)

c.     (-3, 8)

4-    Graph using a table of values.  Use 5 ordered pairs and plot on the graph paper provided, labeling each point.

3x+y=5

For problems 5 and 6, find the x- and y- intercepts of the equations and use the intercepts to graph the equations separately.  Use the graph paper provided for you.

5-    6x + 2y = 18

6-    2y -3x = 24

7-    You are taking up the game of golf and are given 3 cases of golf balls (24 balls per case). You are told that this should last you for at least 18 golf outings.  The equation of the line that models this loss of golf balls is y= -4x + 72.  -4 is the slope and is how many balls you may lose on a single game of golf, due to water hazards and bad shots.  72 is the number of balls you started with.  If you want to keep 8 balls in your bag at all times, after how many golf outings will you have to purchase more golf balls?  Use your knowledge of x- and y- intercepts to figure this out.  Use the graph paper provided for you.

For problems 8 and 9, find the slope of the line given.

8-

9-

10- Find the constant of variation, k, when x = 4 and y = -9, and write the direct variation equation.

11- Write the equation, 8x + 4y= 16 in slope-intercept form and identify the slope and y-intercept.

For problems 12 and 13, graph the following equations using the slope-intercept form of the line.  Use the graph paper provided.

12- y= 6x + 3

13- 3y + 7x = 12

14- Determine which line(s) are parallel to the line of y= 4x+2.  Write ÔyesÕ next to the ones that are parallel and ÔnoÕ next to the ones that are not parallel

a.    -4x=3-2y

b.    3y= 4x-2

c.     4x + 4=y

d.    y=2x + 4

For problems 15 and 16, determine if the relations are functions or not. Write yes or no.

15-

            16-

17- Evaluate the function f(x)=6x Ð 1 for the following values of x:

a.    X=2

b.    X=6

c.     X=-3

For problems 18 and 19, graph the linear function.  Use the graph paper provided for you.

18- f(x) = 4x +2

19- f(x) = -3x -6

20- Please explain the vertical line test and what it is used for.
