The following investigation is designed as a homework problem that can be used in conjunction with Phase II, Maximum Buildable Area.

Scale Measurement

In this assignment, convert all given measurements to the appropriate corresponding scale measures. Express improper fractions as mixed numbers (example: 5/4" should be written as 1 1/4"). Also, when converting from inches to feet, express all answers in the form feet' - inches" (example: 2.5 feet should be written as 2' - 6").

Questions for discussion:

What does it mean to say 1/4" = 20'-0"? Which part of the scale describes the measurement on a ruler? Which part describes an actual measurement in the field?

How would you identify which measurement below describes a ruler measurement, and which describes an actual measurement on a drawing?
