Lesson Plan:
Day 2:
Warm-up Activity: (5 minutes)
To get the students thinking about the previous lesson give them
several shapes of which to find the area and perimeter.
Discussion: (20 minutes)
Discuss where calculating area and perimeter is used. If not previously
mentioned talk about house plans. How would builders know what you
wanted a house to look like if they didn’t have house plans? How would
they know how big a room was going to be without the ability to
calculate area and perimeter? Now introduce the use of a scale model.
Scale Model – used to represent
an object that is too small or too large to be drawn or built at actual
size. For example model cars, dollhouses, etc.
Scale – is determined by the
ratio of a given length on the drawing or model to its corresponding
length in reality.
Discuss the units that are used to
measure rooms of a house. Also, mention the importance of having the
units once again to know what size the rooms will be.
Exercise: (40 minutes)
The student’s are given a house plan that is pre-drawn in Geometer’s
sketchpad on GSP
Excercise. They use this to calculate the area and perimeter of the
rooms and then the entire house. Once again stress the importance of
units. Are we building a dollhouse or a full-scale house? Notice the
scale listed is 1 cm = 1 ft.
Wrap-up: (10 minutes)
As a “ticket out the door”, think about rooms that you would need for
your house plan. Draw out a house plan of your own. Make sure to
include all necessary rooms (bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, dining,
living, etc).
Homework:
Draw out your house plan and include dimensions of each room and the
dimensions of the entire house (don’t forget the units).
