Fall 2001

Listening to Students' Mathematics:

A Foundation for a Critical Pedagogy

A critical pedagogy involves instructional decisions and practices that a teacher makes toward a goal of developing independent thinkers, capable of interpreting, understanding, and affecting change in society. Without knowing students as both cognitive and social beings, the teacher's actions can only be minimally productive toward such a goal. To begin to know students in these ways, teachers must intentionally develop and reflect upon their ability to listen.

During fall semester, all participants will spend an hour each week in Athens-Clarke County schools working with students. We will also meet at UGA for 5 hours in a seminar format to reflect on what we're learning about students and how that might affect our decisions as teachers. Graduate students might also consider their experiences from the perspective of a teacher educator. Participants will create a concise demonstration that reflects their experiences and learning during the semester.

Meeting Time:

Wednesday, Sept. 5, 3:30 - 4:30 pm

4 additional 1-hour meetings to be scheduled

Aderhold Room 102
