Read Kevin Kumashiro's article "Posts" Perspectives on Anti-Oppressive Education in Social Studies, English, Mathematics, and Science Classrooms. Identify his beliefs about the characteristics of an anti-oppressive education. The article is available here or at the AERA website http://www.aera.net/pubs/er/toc/er3003.htm.

Purpose: to begin to establish some common language for discussing critical pedagogy issues

Introduce goals for the seminar

• To further understand our own thinking about critical theory/pedagogy
• To begin to develop a vision of mathematics classrooms
• To extend our inquiry beyond the walls of UGA
