Assignment #5

Reaction Paper

In class, we were asked to write our personal reaction on two different readings. The two readings were, "The Role and Function of Proof with Sketchpad" and "Reasoning and Proof." Although these readings discussed similar topics, my reaction to the first reading was more of a negative response compared to the positive reaction I came across after finishing the second reading.

My first reaction to "The Role and Function of Proof with Sketchpad" was confusion. I had a hard time understanding what exactly they were trying to accomplish by proving why we need proofs. I made the assumption that the reason I had a hard time relating to the topic was because I have had a hard time with proofs in the past and honestly, I do not care that much for proofs. A further reaction I had to this particular reading was lack of concentration and interest. I noticed that I liked how they broke down each proof and described each but it was hard to concentrate because I have NO interest in proofs. Finally, on a positive note, I did enjoy the various quotes throughout the reading. The quotes kept my attention and allowed the reader to view how others felt on the various proofs. Aside from the quotes, I was not pleased with "The Role and Function of Proofs with Sketchpad."

On the other hand, my reactions to the reading on "Reasoning and Proof" were of many and positive. First, I noticed that I liked this reading a whole lot more than the first. "Reasoning and Proof" kept my undivided attention and the content was more appealing. Secondly, the use of numerous examples enabled myself to reach a higher understanding of the topic. I found myself wanting to learn from these examples and maybe use them in my future teaching environment. Finally, the reading acknowledged the importance of reasoning and proof to the point where I understood why it is crucial. It made me realize that proofs offer higher educational levels for the students and that they can use methods of proofs to reason out in the real world.

In conclusion, my reactions to the two readings were conflicting. The first reading left me baffled and bored. After finishing it, I had made up my mind to try and stay clear of proofs. However, after finishing the second reading, I found myself unlocking the closed door on proofs in my mind. It made me realize there is more to proofs than simply proving a mathematical equation. I felt more knowledgeable about the topic and that is essential in order for me to become a prosperous facilitator.
