Proof is needed to do just about any type of math problem. In fact proofs are needed to do just about anything possible. I think that proofs give students an alternative way of looking at certain problems and figuring out how to do those problems. To me proofs are the worst things on earth but I know that if I can do a proof, I can just about do any type of math possible. I can look at a proof and it will tell me not only what the answer is but how to justify what the answer is. Telling the answer to any mathematical problem involves showing some type of proof of how you came up with the answer. I think that the world would not be a functional place if people did not have to prove what they found to be the answer. A student could tell you what a particular answer might be but he or she might not be able to come up with a proof of how to get the answer. The student could have gotten the answer from a friend.
