Syllabus
The required "textbook" is the software Geometer's Sketchpad (GSP). The UGA bookstore has GSP (version 3, student edition) for $37.95, on the MATH textbook shelves. It's a CD which works on PCs (Windows) or Macs.
Here's an outline of topics:
* Geometer's Sketchpad
* Axioms and proofs in geometry
* Trigonometry and analytic geometry
We'll start by getting familiar with Geometer's Sketchpad, which we'll use throughout the course. Then we'll discuss the foundations of geometry, first from an axiomatic viewpoint, and then using analytic methods (trig functions and algebraic equations).
The course will focus on plane Euclidean geometry, but we'll
experiment with other interesting geometries, such as taxicab
geometry and spherical geometry. We'll see relations between geometry
and other subjects in mathematics such as linear algebra and calculus.
