Respond to one of the following two items. Consider the following statement from NCTM’s (2000) Principles and Standards for School Mathematics: “The expanded class of functions available to high school students for mathematical modeling should provide them with a versatile and powerful means for analyzing and describing their world” (p. 297). In your view, what functions should be included in that expanded class? Choose one function, give a modeling problem that would use that function, and describe how you would handle the problem in class. Suppose you wanted to have a discussion about factoring trinomials with a class of eleventh graders who had failed the state exam for high school graduation. What questions might you ask? What are some situations you might present? How would you expect the students to respond? What are some misconceptions the students might have, and how would you address them? Section 2. Respond to Item 1 and either Item 2 or Item 3 below. Suppose your first job is in an urban middle school whose students come mostly from minority or low SES backgrounds. On your first few days there, the principal tells you not to bother teaching these children a lot of complicated mathematics. “All they need are the basics,” he claims. Write a letter to the principal explaining your position about what students need to learn in mathematics courses. Use the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics and other documents to support your position. (Assume you are not worried about being fired, so you can really say what you think in this letter!) Research, technology, the economy, government, textbooks, parents, diversity, and testing are some factors that influence school mathematics. Choose two of these factors and discuss how they affect the mathematics taught in American classrooms. How do you think they will affect you as a future mathematics teacher? Implementing curriculum changes in mathematics classrooms is a difficult task. As a beginning teacher, explain the most important changes you would like to make in your mathematics classroom compared with the classrooms you experienced as a student. Are these ideas are already being implemented in most classrooms across the country? What support system do teachers need to implement such ideas? What factors can hinder such curriculum change? Section 3: Special Topic INSTRUCTIONS: Open book, open computer. Use any resources other than asking another person for assistance. How would you use technology to enhance instruction and learning? Give examples and describe what you would do as the instructor and what you would expect from the students.
