Symmetry in Native Crafts

by Nami Youn

Introduction

There are many mathematical aspects involved in the discipline of art. Symmetry is observed not only in art and architecture, also in native crafts. We already know about various ways the symmetry appears in real life. The purpose of this project is to introduce the occurrences of the symmetry in native crafts, specially, Carpets, Rugs and Quilts. These contents are related to mathematics and aesthetics section. It contains how human being uses the symmetry to make his artwork beautiful. The analysis of symmetry transformed into great works of art would allow for understanding the organization of a pattern, and provides a means for determining both invariance and change.
