Exploring polar graphs

Doug Griffin

We now wish to investigate graphs of the polar form . Lets begin by letting a=0 and investigating various values for b and k. Below are some simple graphs where we let b=1 and vary the value of k.

Careful inspection of the graphs above will show that equations of this type where k is a positive even number will produce n petaled roses where n=2k. The graph reaches its maximum point at x=1 and this should not be surprising since that is the maximum value for the cosine function.
