Using the STAT-CALC Menu

    Minitab, and other statistical software packages can easily find the "descriptive statistics" about their data sets with a few key strokes.  Well, TI-83 owners can do the same.  Let's practice:

 
First, let's put some data into list 1.  I have put the numbers 1 - 10 into my calculator but you may choose your own data set. A data set
Now press the STAT button, and use the right arrow to highlight the CALC menu. The STATCALC menu
We are going to use the 1 VAR stats option, so press enter to get the following screen. 1-VAR statistics
You may scroll down to find out more about your data set. More 1-VAR stats
   Notice that your recieve information about your mean and standard deviation, as well as, the median and quartiles of your data.  This information is found relatively quickly, and can prove to be very useful to problems you are trying to solve.
