Day 4: Exponential Functions

Objectives:

To recognize exponential functions and their graphs.

To transform the graph of a function.

Materials:

Microsoft Excel (or any other spreadsheet)

Graphing Calculator with overhead extension

Procedure:

Open the lesson with the One Grain of Rice story/activity. This is a children's story often read to students in elementary school.

Graph the following function on the overhead calculator (either TI-82 or TI-83):

f(x) = 2^x

Then graph

g(x) = 2^x + 3

Compare the two graphs and discuss the vertical shift.

Graph f(x) = 4^x

Have students sketch g(x) = 4^x - 1

Tell students to discover how to make a horizontal shift to the right 2 units with f(x) = 3^x.

Let them experiment with their calculators. Check their progress.

Have a volunteer to share their answer.

Tell them this is called transforming a graph.
