Days 9 and 10: Final Assessment

The objective of these two days is to assess the students' knowledge of isometric transformational geometry. Students will be given a template in GSP and will be asked to move given shapes using transformational geometry to fill the template. The objective for the students will be to fill the template using the least number of transformations.

There are few things you need to know before beginning this activity with your students.

Unfortunately, the objects do not all appear on the screen at one time. This is something we are working on, but in the meantime what we have available will be sufficient.

Please tell your students to not save when they close the application. (If they have not completed the assessment in the class period allotted and need to finish later, they may save onto their own disks.)

We have provided three links for the students to visit. The first is for them to actually do the assessment. The second is available for them after they have completed the assessment. It allows them to see the shapes move one at a time. The last link is available as a Finale. It allows the students to simply see everything move to its correct position at the touch of a button.

This assessment has been implemented in Carla's and Robyn's college geometry class. Potential problems to look for are simple computer problems. Some computers would not open the GSP links. We would recommend that in advance you copy the workplace GSP page onto a disk. That way you will have it handy if you need to open the workplace for a student.

Once the students have completed the assessment and turned in their results to you, they may click here to see the figures move one at a time.

Note: There are a few limitations of the "action" function of GSP.You may want to explain to your students that this page does not necessarily show the least amount of transformations, but it will allow them to see the figures move. Also notice that reflections had to be done in advance. The lighter colored shapes are in the original position, while the darker colored shapes are in the reflected position.
