Problem #2

ORTHOCENTER

The following are instructions and detailed pictures of how to construct the Orthocenter of a triangle. Read below and then go to sketchpad to construct your own triangle and orthocenter.

To investigate what the orthocenter(H) of triangles is, begin with a triangle ABC.

Construct the altitudes from each vertex. An altitude is a segment or line that extends from a vertex, perpendicular to the opposite side (this may be the extension of a side).

Make a point of intersection of the three altitudes.(H) This is the orthocenter.

Hide the lines so that only the point H, orthocenter is visible.

Click here to open sketchpad and investigate on your own. Sketchpad

To investigate...

Measure angle ABC. Now drag vertice B so that angle ABC remains acute.

Where is the orthocenter located?

Now drag vertice B so that angle ABC is a right angle.

Where is the orthocenter located?

Drag vertex B so that angle ABC is an obtuse triangle.

Where is the orthocenter located?

What conclusions can you make about the orthocenter(H)?

Type your conclusions at the bottom of your investigation and save.
