INSTRUCTIONAL UNIT

GEOMETRIC AREA AND PROBABILITY

by
Beverly Hales and Mark Cowart

Purpose:

This instructional unit has been designed with the high school geometry student in mind. It is based on the curriculum standards developed for geometry in the Georgia public school system and closely matches the quality core curriculum (QCC) objectives established by the state. The unit develops material for high school geometry teachers to use for approximately 10 days of mathematics instruction. Students should be able to work through the material and gain specific knowledge about finding area to various geometric figures as well as make application of area to probability. The lessons will incorporate the use of The Geometer's Sketchpad (GSP) application software to enhance content development and give students hands-on experiences with area and probability.

Prerequisite Skills

The student should be able to express a number as a fraction, decimal or percent.

The student should be able to graph equations and inequalities.

The student should be able to apply the Pythagorean Theorem.

Lesson One Area and Perimeter of Polygonal Regions.

Lesson Two Area and Circumference of Circles.

Lesson Three Introduction to Probability

Lesson Four Introduction to Geometric Probability

Lesson Five More Geometric Probability
