DAY ONE
10-1 Probability and Odds
Content Skills:

- finding the odds in favor of an event
- working with ratios
Vocabulary and Symbols:
- probability
- outcomes
- equally likely
- event
- odds
- fair
Resources needed:
- Texts
- Definition Transparencies
- 7 Spinner Sheets & Clues
- 7 Dry Earase Markers
- Paper Towels
Activities:
- Introduction of Probability Terms
- Deductive Reasoning (in groups) Game
to Reinforce Vocabulary
Evaluation:
Formal:
Page 422 #17-28 EVEN and MIXED REVIEW
Informal:
- Before beginning book work, students
must justify their spinner solutions to teacher. Encourage groups to assign
members specific responsibilities. One member may be the presenter and
talk most in this teacher evaluation time.
DAY TWO
10-2 Exploring Probabilities
Content Skills:
- finding the probability of a complement
- understanding and interpreting the range
of probabilities
- understanding percents
Vocabulary and Symbols:
- complement
- certain
- impossible
Activities:
Student(s) obtain brown bag containing jelly beans,
spinner, and paperclip. With jelly bean bag, students will:
- 1. count jelly beans and label spinner
(review in circle graphs).
- 2. write the probability for drawing
each color, then spinning each color. *Is it the same?
- 3. write the odds for both.
- 4. write two outcomes that are equally
likely to happen.
- 5. write an outcome and its complement.
- 6. write an event that is certain to
happen.
- 7. write an event that is impossible.
- 8. draw and replace 10 jelly beans from
the bag and record data.
- 9. spin spinner 10 times and record data.
- 10. write one sentence about how the
probability compares with the actual and another sentence about how each
experiment compares with the other.
- 11. also answer Did the certain event
happen? Did the impossible event happen?
Evaluation:
Formal:
Page 424-425 #10-21 ALL
Informal:
Observe students working together using vocabulary.
DAY THREE

Visit M&M's web site at www.baking.m-ms.com/faq.htm to see what the experts say you should find each time
you open a bag of M&M's. Then obtain a bag of those melt-in-your-mouth
candies and use it to help you learn probability. Click
here for activity sheet.
