The stock market prices that are reported in the
newspaper tell what has happened at the market yesterday. After the market
has closed for the day, it is usually printed in the next edition of the
newspaper. The report is important because it indicates how much confidence
investors has in various companies and in the economy as a whole.
The first column above is the name of the company
or its abbreviation. The other columns from left to right are:
Dividend This number is the portion of earnings
paid to the shareholders each year. Dividends are paid quarterly; a NIKE
shareholder is paid 10 cents per share every three months.
PE This number is a ratio of the price of the
stock to its earnings. PE indicates relative value.
Sales Hds This number tells how many hundreds
of shares of the stock were traded that day. 353,200 shares of Kellogg's
stock were traded.
High This is the highest amount in dollars and
fractions of dollars that someone was willing to pay for the stock that
day. The high for Disney was 81 1/2 dollars or $81.50.
Low This was the lowest price paid for the stock
that day. Coca-Cola's low was 62 3/8 dollars for $62.375 a share.
Close This is the price that the stock was selling
for at the end of the day. NIKE closed at 55 7/8 or $55.875. In our simulations,
the closing price is the price that you will use when buying and selling
stocks.
Net Chg The net change is the amount in dollars
or fractions of dollars that the price of the stock has changed since the
close of the previous day's trading. Kellogg's is up 1 3/4 which means that
the price of a share is now $1.75 higher than it was the previous day.

Total cost is what you pay--the value of the stock plus the commission.
Total proceeds is what you receive from sale--the value of the stock minus
