I have two very nice lap dulcimers. The lower one in the picture above
was made by John Mize and was given me by a dear friend and colleague from
Tennessee. It has a wormy chestnut top and walnut sides and back. The fretboard
and pegs are of rosewood. John Mize's dulcimers are exhibited in the Smithsonian.
It has three strings.
The second one was made of Cherry. The inscription inside says "Made
for Jim Wilson by Warren A. May, Berea, Kentucky, as a gift from the UGA
Mathematics Education Students. #7799." Many former students went
together to have the dulcimer made for me and it was given to me at a meeting
in Indianapolis in 1994. The craftsmanship is marvelous and it has a full
mellow tone. It is a four string model.
