WU Number 2, Problem 7

David W. Stinson

Try several graphs of the following function on the same axes (i.e. use different values of a).

y = ax^2

I f a < 0, the function is reflected over a horizontal line. If 0 < a < 1, the function is a "stretching out". As a approaches (1 ) one the function is said to be in its parent form. As a approaches (0 ) zero, the function approaches the function y = 0. If a > 1 the function is accelerating, being pulled up. As a approaches positive infinity the function will approach the vertical line of x = 0.
