Assignments for Math 3116 (M&W)

please click here for A#1 - 10

"An expert problem solver must be endowed with two incompatible qualities, a restless imagination and a patient pertinacity."

A #11 (Due February 17th ~ Monday) 10pts

2 problems to solve... NO formal write-up expected. I'll just look at what you did to make sure you worked on both problems. You may view the problem on-line or download it as a word dociment - whatever works for you :)

A #12 (Due Ongoing...) lots of points

Go back to the activities listed below and organize the numerical data in t-tables. Then make scatterplots of each data set - either by hand on graph paper or using a software package. If you need/want help with Excel, click here to go to a website that explains how to create scatter plots on Microsoft Excel.

1. Leapfrog Game (# frogs on one side, # moves to win)
2. Locker Problem (# students (0, 20, 40, 60, ..., 200), # lockers open)
3. Summing Multiples (n, Sum from n to 100n)
4. Elevator (# minutes, floor #)
5. Million Dollar - Double (#days, Total Amount Earned)
6. Million Dollar - Triple (#days, Total Amount Earned)
7. Million Dollar - One and a Half (#days, Total Amount Earned)
8. Tower of Hanoi (# discs, # moves to win)
9. Crickets Chirping (Temp, # chirps)
New!! 10. Stacking Cups (# cups, Height of stack) - have this set ready to discuss on Monday 2/24 Note: You can find this activity on pg. 81 in the 6-8 text ... you can print it from your CD (blackline masters) if you want to.

Also New!! 11. Squares Cubed (Length of Side, Perimeter/ Area/ Volume) - have this set ready to discuss on Monday 2/24 Note: You can find this activity on pg. 86-88 in the 3-5 text ... you can print it from your CD (blackline masters) if you want to.

Please keep these data sets and graphs... we will continue to add components to this assignment over the next few weeks and finally turn in one project

A #13 (Due February 24th ~ Monday) 10pts

On pg. 78 - 79 in the 6-8 text you will find problems in which you are to connect Stories to Graphs and Graphs to Stories. Please complete these 2 assignments (you can print them from your CD (blackline masters) if you want to). You will be turning these in on Monday at the beginning of class. The stories do not have to or need to be lengthy but they do need to sufficiently describe the situation. Please label the axes and title all graphs.

Note: Your class only needs to complete one of these assignments as we did Graphs to Stories in class on Wednesday.

A #14 (Due February 26th ~ Wednesday) 10pts

Once you have completed the 2 new parts of A #12 and both parts of A #13, click here for Journal Entry #6.

A #15 (Due March 3rd ~ Monday) Function Families

Part One: Matching Algebraic with Graphical Representations (we did this in class on Wednesday-click to download or view a copy of the handouts

Part Two: Now match each of the pairs in part one with the correct function name below... if you don't know, make a good guess :)

Linear, Quadratic, Cubic, Exponential, Logarithmic, Square Root, Absolute Value, Step, Periodic (Trigonometric)

Click here when you are finished to check your answers :)

Part Three: Numerical Representations - Make a t-table of values for each function in part one. The table should contain atleast 5 pairs of data.

NOTE: In order to complete this assignment you will need to use one of the following:

A #16 (Due March 3rd ~ Monday) Function Parameters

In this assignment we are going to investigate how given values of parameters (a, b and c) effect the graph of a function. For each function listed below you are to investigate how each parameter effects the parent function... my suggestion is that you only investigate one parameter at a time.

Click here for an example to get you started. You do not need to write-up anything to turn in just yet so make your notes in a way that makes sense to you :) Again, use any graphing method you want to (calculator, software, etc.) If you want to use GSP, click here for a GSP file that will help you get started...

NOTE: This is a really powerful way to investigate parameters using GSP in a dynamic way... this website walks you through the investigation step-by-step. If you have GSP (or access to it) give it a try!!

A #17 (Due no later than 5:00pm pm March 24th ~ Monday) 60 points

This assignment is your final project for Unit Two. You will be using information from Assignments #11 - 16 as your work on the project. Please click here to view the specific details and requirements for this project.

A #18 (On March 12th ~ Wednesday) 15 points

We will take a short in-class QUIZ on A #16... you may use your notes from the assignment. Click here for a Sample Quiz Question
