The concept of functions may be one of the most important concepts in mathematics. Functions link together many branches of mathematics that may otherwise seem unrelated. Mathematics teachers need to emphasize to students that functions arise naturally and are critical to mathematical thinking. The concept of functions needs to become the backbone of mathematics courses and instruction, rather than just an isolated unit.

Our instructional unit is a collection of activities dealing with different types of functions. The activities are not intended to be used consecutively. Instead, each activity can be used throughout the curriculum depending upon which type of function is being taught. The purpose of the activities is to enhance the teaching of functions through the use of technology.
