Good For You!!! Although very logical and mathematically correct, that solution does not yeild the shortest possible route.

If we use the solution as illustrated previously the spider will travel 3ft + 36ft + 3ft which equals 42ft. That is a lot of crawling for a little spider.
Alternately if the spider simply went to the edge of the ceiling, crawled straight down the side of the cylinder and went straight across the diameter to the fly it would only crawl 3ft + 8ft + 17ft which equals 28ft. As you can see that is considerably shorter than the previous solution.
