I received my initial teaching certificate in 1963 in Germany where I taught for 12 years. From 1982 to 1993, I attended The University of Georgia as a non-traditional student and received an M.Ed. in 1986 and a Ph.D. in 1993, both in Mathematics Education. My dissertation, Children’s Organization of Counting in Joint Counting Tasks, was directed by Dr. Jeremy Kilpatrick.

I have served in my current position as AP since September 1995. My activities within the department include teaching, research, outreach, and professional and administrative services.

Teaching: I have taught content and methods courses for preservice and inservice elementary, middle school, and secondary teachers. As member of the Secondary Program Team, I developed the initial syllabus for the new course EMAT 4500/6500, "Connections in Secondary School Mathematics," and I taught the course in Fall 1998,  Spring 2000, and Spring 2001.

From August 2001 to August 2002, I coordinated the Business-to-Teaching program for Mathematics Education. I adapted EMAT 4500/6500, "Connections in Secondary School Mathematics," for WebCT and will taught the course with a large web-based component in Fall 2001.

Research: I served as Research Associate in the Fractions Project. My primary interest within the project is the interaction of individual and social factors in the construction of fractional knowledge. I also adapted the activities initially designed for elementary students to be used with middle school students.

Outreach: As director of the Eisenhower Project "Ordinal Number and Linear Models in Primary Mathematics Instruction," I conducted three summer workshops for primary teachers in Jackson Primary School (Butts County). During the school years 1995-1998, I taught numerous lessons in order to model the use of manipulatives and technology in primary mathematics classrooms. With Dr. Norman Thomson (Science Education) I have co-directed a 2-year Eisenhower Project, "Integrating Mathematics, Science, and Language Arts: Hands-On/Minds-On Workshop for Middle School Mathematics and Science Teachers." Since Summer 2001, I am part of the project visiting team for Eisenhower projects in Georgia.

I am part of the evaluation team for the "Improving Teacher Quality Grants Program," the program replacing Eisenhower.

Professional service: I have served as Managing Editor of the Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education, published by Kluwer, from 1996 to 2001.
Since January 2003, I serve as Project Manager for the "Center for Proficiency in Teaching Mathematics" [CPTM].

Administrative services: As Undergraduate Coordinator, I initially advise all students whose major or intended major is mathematics education or the dual major Mathematics / Mathematics Education. I organize the Hooten Award program in Spring, I assist faculty and students with all the necessary paper work and requirements, and I serve as contact person for the Student Services offic and the Educational Field Experiences office.
