The use of spreadsheets in exploring mathematical concepts is a very powerful method of displaying data. Very quickly, you can enter formulas such as y = f(x) and display values for x. In the following example, I will use Microsoft Excel to show the values of the following equations.
Initially, I will create a table of values of each equation as shown below. For my x value inputs I used the range from -10 to 10.
In the table you can quickly see for what value of x the y value is displayed. That is to say, the y values are solutions of one of the three equations for a particular value of x. Although this data may be very useful, it certainly is difficult to see what each of the equations looks like graphically. For that, we can use the "Chart Wizard" in Excel to graph the data.
