Equations


A Preview of Lesson 5.3

 

Ordered pairs can be used to represent solutions to equations in two variables. Thus, the solution set of an equation for a defined domain is a relation. We can use a graphing calculator to investigate the relation and determine the range when the domain is given.

 

Example: Solve y = 2.5 x + 4 if the domain is {-8, -6, -4, -2, 0, 2, 4, 6, 8}

 

METHOD 1: Store teh elements of the domain as a list of values in L1.

Enter: { - 8 , - , - 6 , - 4 , - 2 , 0 , 2 , 4 , 6 , 8 }

 

To calculate the range values, compute the right-hand side of the equation, substituting L1 for x

Enter: 2.5 + 4

 

The solution set is {(-8, -16), (-6, -11), (-4, -6), (-2, -1), (0, 4), (2, 9), (4, 14), (6, 19), (8, 24)}

 

 

METHOD 2: Store the equation in the Y= menu of the calculator and view the table of values it creates.

Enter: 2.5 X,T,q + 4 - 8 2

 

A table with columns X and Y1 appears on the screen. The values in the Y1 column represent the corresponding range values for each x value in the domain. This table helps you find the ordered pairs that are solutions for the equation. The solution set is {(-8, -16), (-6, -11), (-4, -6), (-2, -1), (0, 4), (2, 9), (4, 14), (6, 19), (8, 24)}, which agrees wiht the list in Method 1.
