LetŐs start by examining the
graph of y = x2 + bx + 1.


We can find the vertex of each
parabola and plot the curve created by the vertices to find the locus:

where y =
- x2 + 1.
Something interesting is that y = x2 + 1 is
the locus for y = - x2 + bx + 1.
