Objectives for Conic Sections
Unit
Students will:
- be able to identify which conic section
is formed by a specific cut of the cone;
- be able to identify and label examples
of conic sections used in the real life world from newspapers,
magazines, internet resources of their own personal experiences;
- know about the historical context in
which the conic sections is developed;
- understand the geometrical construction
of a conic section from its definition;
- understand and identify the special points
and lines (vertex, focus, foci, directrix, etc.) for a conic
section;
- understand different forms of equations
(i.e. analytic, polar and parametric) of a conic section;
- write the appropriate equation of a conic
section when given appropriate parts such as focus, vertex, etc.;
- graph the conic section using its standard
form of analytic, polar and parametric equations;
- convert a given non-standard equation
of a conic section to a standard one;
