Probability with the TI-83 Plus

This page will discuss how to use the probability functions built into the TI-83 Plus.  These functions are not under the STAT menu for this section, but can be found by using the MATH menu.
Pressing the MATH menu key will display the screen at the right.
Press your left arrow key once to get to the PRB or probability menu.  The 7 options showing are the only ones on this menu.
We will begin with the built in random number generator.  Choose rand from the menu and continue to hit ENTER.  You will get a list of randomly generated numbers on your screen.  Change the floating point value on your MODE screen to limit the number of digits you get.
This menu lets the user do permutations and combinations with ease.  Just remember to type these in as you would say them.  For instance, "5 choose 2" you would press the following keystrokes; 5, MATH, left arrow3, 2, ENTER.
The factorial option is simple to utilize.  To find the solution to 10!, just type in your ten, then MATH, left arrow, 4, ENTER.
I especially like this next built in function.  My students enjoy setting up probability experiments with the randInt( option.  Choose this option from the PRB menu and give a range of integers for the calculator to choose from.  For instance (1,6) will give random integers from 1 to 6.  This is a nice way to look at probability with number cubes.  Just keep pressing ENTER after each roll of the die and you'll get you next roll.  Pretty neat huh?  Choose randNorm(, and randBin( in a similar manner to receive the desired results.
