The students now need to decide how much material will be needed for all the students to build a planter. For this step of the project, I have had better results if the students worked individually. This could be caused by it being an estimation that is from a concrete concept (paneling and board) to an abstract concept of everyone building a planter. I have also considered that the students might need a few class period to refocus.
After the class has agreed upon the number of sheets of paneling and the number of boards they need, the students will need to discuss the amount of money that will need to purchase the material. They will need to be provided with the cost of a sheet of paneling and the cost of an 8 ft. by 8 in. board. Once the students have figured an overall cost, they should then figure a cost per planter.
