My name is Shareef Bacchus and I have been working as an eighth grade math teacher at Hilsman Middle School in Athens, Georgia for the past six (6) years. Prior to this, I served as a math instructor at the Teachers Training College in St. Lucia, West Indies for a period of two (2) years. Before going to St. Lucia, I taught Calculus, Advanced Algebra, and Trigonometry at The Richard Ishmael Secondary School, which is a senior secondary school in Guyana, South America. I worked at this school for a period of twelve (12) years and was the Department Head for the last five (5) years of that tenure. One of the highlights of my teaching career so far has been the honor accorded me last year when I became not only the Teacher of the Year for my school, but also the Teacher of the Year for Clarke County.
I have a Bachelors degree in Mathematics as well as a post-graduate Diploma in Math Education from the University of Guyana. Additionally, I have a Masters as well as a Specialist degree in math education from the University of Georgia.
I am married and my wife and I have two (2) sons. My wife Salima teaches Spanish at Cedar Shoals High School in Athens. My elder son Shaheed is twenty three years old. He has a Bachelors as well as a Masters degree in Computer Science from the University Of Georgia and works in the Math Department of the same university. My younger son Sarfraz who is one of the joys of my life is fifteen (15) years old and is a tenth grader at Cedar Shoals High School where his mother actively monitors his progress.
