I came to the United States from Singapore about 8 years ago
to do my uindergraduate studies. I studied Mathematics and Pshychology at
Rolins College, Winter Park, Florida. I continued my studies at the University
of Georgia in Statistics. While at this university, my interest in teaching
mathematics became stronger, so I decided to join the mathematics education
department. Since my arrival at this department, my interest have shifted
from college mathematics to elementary school mathematics and everything
that is involved in the elementary school.
Consequently, I pursued my K-5 teaching certificate so that I can gain experience
in the elementary school culture as well as elementary teacher education.
I spent this year in a third grade classroom and loved it.
On a more personal level, I am recently married to Mark J. Garey (since
21 Dec. 1996) and we live in Statham, GA. It is about 10 min. west from
the Athens mall. My parents live in Singapore and we visit once a year.
I have a sister getting her M.A. in Counseling from Boston College. I have
another sister in Singapore who just started her secondary teacher education
program.
These are my children at the moment. The male tabby's name is Tiger. The female grey one is Chessie. She is named after the Chesapeake - Ohio railroad kitten. My husband Mark is a model railroader, so in order to involve him in this cat thing, I named one of the cats after a train logo. Tiger & Chessie were given to me by Pamela Turner (another Ph.D. student in our dept.).
I have sad news to share with you. Tiger died Wed. 4 Aug early in the morning. His sudden deterioration of health seemed to have begun with a liver infection. Mark and I miss Tiger very much; he brought us much joy and love.
On a happier note, we adopted a stray cat who have been showing up at
our doorstep since May. We named him Salty because of the color of his coat.
