LESSON 6

DILATION

(ENLARGEMENT)

OBJECTIVES: The students will know the difference between dilations that shrink or enlarge. They will be able to enlarge an object using a center point and two vectors. They will explore the effects of dilation using various center points.

PROCEDURE:

(1) Lecture/discussion

(2) Demonstration (within lecture)

(3) Individual work on computer

LESSON/CLASSWORK:

I. BRIEF REVIEW OF YESTERDAY'S WORK

A. What is dilation?

B. What are the two kinds of dilations?

C. Defining data

(1) Center point

(2) Two vectors

II. DILATION (ENLARGEMENT)

A. Reverse action of dilation's shrinking

B. Reversal of ratio of vectors

C. Process

(1) Draw an object

(2) Construct a center point and two vectors

(3) "Mark" the longer vector first, then the shorter one

(4) Highlight object

(5) Click "Dilate" command in Transform box

D. Results

(1) Original object

(2) An enlarged image of the original object

III. WRAP-UP

A. Regroup

B. Discuss results, other findings

IV. DISMISS
