Figure 1: Parallel lines are needed to construct DEAJ with the sides of DEAJ are the same length as the medians of DABC. First, construct a line through point E that is parallel to segment BF. Next, construct a line through point F that is parallel to segment BC. Let the point of intersection be point J. Quad. BFJE is a parallelogram with opposite sides side congruent. Segment BF is congruent to segment EJ. Using a similar construction, we see that quad. AJCD is a parallelogram with opposite sides congruent. Segment AJ is congruent to segment DC. DEAJ has been constructed so that the sides are the same as the medians of DABC.
