I encourage you to please take advantage of office hours. Often there is not sufficient time in class to ensure that every student understands the material presented. Clearing up a small problem early will often avoid much confusion later on. Please do not hesitate to contact me for assistance. If office hours are not convenient for you, please call me. I am often able to answer questions over the phone and it is no inconvenience to me. I would like to help you pass this course, but I cannot help if you do not ask.
Prerequisites: Math 1101 (Intro. to Math. Modeling) or Math 1113 (Precalculus) or Math 2431 (Calculus I).
Text: David Moore. The Basic Practice of Statistics, 2nd Ed. (Required).
Other Materials: The TI-83 calculator is required for the course and the only one that will be supported by the instructor. The laboratory manual accompanying the text is written specifically for the TI-83 calculator. The TI-83 is a sophisticated tool for the use in statistics classes and will assist you with tedious calculations. The built-in statistical features will allow you to concentrate on the important concepts and ideas of the course.
Course Description: This course is designed for students whose programs require a course in statistics as well as for those who wish to elect such a course. Topics to be covered include descriptive statistics, basic probability, discrete and continuous distributions, sample estimation of parameters, hypothesis testing, tests on means, chi-square tests, correlation, linear regression, and non-parametric tests.
Course Evaluation: Tests, exams and the final grade of the course will be calculated as follows:
Type | Number | Points | Total Points |
---|---|---|---|
Projects | 2 | 25 | 50 |
Tests | 4 | 100 | 400 |
Final Exam | 1 | 150 | 150 |
TOTAL | 600 |
Grading Scale:
Grade | Percentage | Points |
---|---|---|
A | 90% - 100% | 540 - 600 |
B | 80% - 90% | 480 - 539 |
C | 70% - 80% | 420 - 479 |
D | 60% - 70% | 360 - 419 |
F | below 60% | below 360 |
Tentative Test Dates:
Final Exam Date: Tuesday, 6 Aug 03, 8:00-10:00 p.m.
Assignments and Projects:
Reading assignments & homework will be assigned for each class.
Due to the shortened summer semester, the homework will NOT be collected nor graded; however, you should
be prepared to discuss all the questions in class. Two Projects (the due dates are negotiable) will be
assigned independently of the normal class work. Students will be asked to submit a written report for each project.
Make-up Work:
You are responsible for all work. There will be a 5% penalty for each day the project is late.
Missed Test Policy:
No make-up tests will be given unless prior arrangements are made.
If you discover that you will be absent on the test day due to illness or other emergency, please leave
a message with the Rockdale Center secretary 770.785.6970 or on my home phone 404.373.2056. Test
corrections are NOT permitted for make-up tests. Make-up tests MUST be taken within one (1) week of the
original test date.
Attendance Policy:
Attendance will be
taken at each class meeting. At midpoint, any student whose average is below 70
and who has missed more than three class meetings up to the midpoint of the
semester will be withdrawn with a "W" from the class. Attendance will not be
used in determining final grades.
Cheating Policy:
All student work must be that of the student submitting the work unless
otherwise noted. Projects completed with partners or as small groups should be so noted with all names
indicated on the papers. The giving or receiving of help from notes or another person during exams or
tests may result in a grade of zero for this work and/or a grade of "F" in the course, and/or referral
to the campus disciplinary committee for penalty, which may include suspension for the College. See
Academic
Honesty policy.
