Statistical Plotting with a TI-83

Graphing Calculator

Entering the Data

Data is stored in lists on the TI graphing calculators. The lists are name L1 to L6, although you can change their names.

Changing list name L1 to L6 to variable names:

press stat 5 to SetUpEditor.

enter variable names separated by commas (up to 6). The variable names can be made by using the green letters. Press ALPHA then the letter to make your variable names.

For example if you wanted to list the test scores of Males and Females you could use the variable names FScrs for female scores and MScr for Male Scores You would enter :

Key (letter)
ALPHA COS (F)
ALPHA LN (S)
ALPHA PRGM (C)
ALPHA X (R)
,
ALPHA (M)
ALPHA LN (S)
ALPHA PRGM (C)
ALPHA X (R)
ENTER

You should see Done at this point. Note: You will have to type these names when you define the plots.

.

To enter the data:

press stat and enter (Edit).

You will now have a screen with L1 to L3 at the top, or FSCR MSCR -----, if you changed the variable list names L1, L2 as in the previous example. These are the list names.

To clear a list use the ^ key to the put the cursor on the list you which to clear and press clear.

To enter data: use the arrow keys to put the cursor below the listname you will use for your variable. Enter the numbers with the numeric keypad, pressing down arrow (or enter) between numbers. Do this for as many variables as you which to enter.

To make a box-n-whisker plot:

After the data is entered into lists press

2nd STATPLOT

Select 1:Plot 1 Use the arrow to put cursor on On end press Enter
press downarrow to select type. Use > arrow to put cursor on the box plot and press enter.
Use downarrow to put the variable name in Xlist you wish to plot. In our example we would use the green letter keys to type Fscr.
Now use uparrow key to put cursor over Plot2 and press ENTER
press downarrow to select type. Use > arrow to put cursor on the box plot and press enter.
Use downarrow to put the variable name in Xlist you wish to plot. In our example we would use the green letter keys to type Mscr.

Press Y= and turn off all functions.
Press Zoom 9 to select 9:ZoomStat
Press Trace to find the summary statistics indicated in each plot

To make a scatter plot:

Enter the data for the variables you want a scatter plot of into two lists.

Try this: Press STAT 1 put cursor over L1 and press CLEAR and ENTER to clear L1. Do the same for L2. Now put the cursor under L1 and press

1 ENTER
2 ENTER
3 ENTER
4 ENTER
5 ENTER
Now put the cursor under L2 and press

2 ENTER
4 ENTER
6 ENTER
8 ENTER
10 ENTER

Now Press

2nd STATPLOT

Select 1:Plot 1 Use the arrow to put cursor on On end press Enter
press downarrow to select type. Use > arrow to put cursor on the first graph (scatter) and press enter.
Use downarrow to put the L1 in Xlist.
Use downarrow to put the L2 in Ylist.
Turn Plot2 and Plot3 off.
Press Y= and turn off all functions.

Press Zoom 9 to select 9:ZoomStat
Zoomstat adjusts the values of Xmin,Xmax, Ymin and Ymax to include all the data.
OR to see the axes
Press WINDOW and select Xmin = 0, Ymin=0. Press Graph.

Now to find the equation of the line that fits the data just plotted press:

STAT > 4

you will see LinReg(ax+b)

press 2nd 1 (L1) , 2nd 2 (L2) ENTER

You will see
y=ax+b
a = 2
b = 0.

This is the least squares line that fits the data you entered in L1 and L2 previously.
