PUZZLERS

Old MacDonald had a farm, EE-I-EE-I-OH!

And on that farm he had some pigs, EE-I-EE-I-OH!

With an Oink oink! here, and an Oink oink! there.

Here an Oink! There and Oink!

Everywhere and Oink oink!

Old MacDonald had a farm, EE-I-EE-I-OH!

Old MacDonald had some turkeys, too (certainly with a Gobble gobble here and a Gobble gobble there). One day, while out feeding them all, he noticed that, if he added everything together, his pigs and his turkeys had a total of 24 legs and 12 wings between them. How many pigs did Old MacDonald have? And how many turkeys?

Mrs. MacDonald was a farmer too. She kept the cows and chickens. One day when she went out to feed them she counted everything up, and found that her animals had a total of 12 heads and 34 legs. How man cows did she have? How many chickens?

In the link-weiner factory in Sausageville, the wieners are made in long strings, with a link of skin holding each sausage to the next one. So, although the wieners are firm, you can bend the string of wieners around into many shapes. For example, you can easily bend a string of three wieners into a triangle. Suppose you had a string of 9 wieners. Without breaking the string, how many triangles can you make?

Solutions

Old MacDonald: 3 pigs, 6 turkeys

Mrs. MacDonald: 5 cows, 7 chickens

Wiener Triangles: 5 triangles, including the big one around the outside.
