Calculator Use Paper
EMAT 7050 (Teaching Secondary School Mathematics) Research Paper
(.pdf)

For a research project in a graduate-level Methods course, I chose to investigate studies related to calculator use in mathematics classes (link above). I feel that preservice and inservice teachers often see students' inappropriate use of calculators—for example, in calculating a simple sum—as reason to ban all calculator use in their classroom; I was interested in learning more about how to use calculators in a truly beneficial way without encouraging this calculator dependence. When I began student teaching, I used the knowledge I had gained from this research to capitalize on technology's unique instructional capabilities.
